Kay Worrall's Marathon Runs

Kays 100 ksFor those who haven’t heard about Kay Worrall (Granny Kay) – and there will be few, Kay is a grandmother who among other things is also a marathon runner and triathlete. Kay raised funds for AARF by having people sponsor her marathon runs. Kay was also the Patron of AARF, from 2003 to 2006.

She first laced on her running shoes to follow her son into competitive running. From this beginning, her runs became longer and more demanding.

The 100k Run

Kay’s first marathon run for AARF was from Terrigal to Concord Hospital in May 2001. Kay dedicated this run to her mother Alva Feeney who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1993. Through sponsorship and publicity, Kay’s 100-km run has had a profound effect on the community's awareness and sympathy for those people with Alzheimer's disease and their families.

The 300k Run

If you can run 100k, why not run 300k. Yes, and that’s what Kay did in September 2003, a marathon run from Sydney to Canberra. Again, the purpose of her run was to increase public awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and to raise funds for both Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and AARF.

Starting from Alzheimer’s Australia NSW headquarters in Ryde (Sydney) on the 14th of September 2003, Kay followed the “old” highway and railway route to Canberra. She completed her eight-day run on the steps of Parliament House, on Sunday the 21st of September, Word Alzheimer's Day.

What can one say? Incredible, amazing, hardly seems adequate. Thank you very much Kay, what an achievement!
